I was spending like five dollars a day on those starbucks double shots till I bought this.

I don’t actually drink the coffee straight from this so I can’t review the quality of it that way.

It cost me less than and it makes about 8 ounces in one shot. I mix that with 1.5 tablespoons of sugar while it is hot then mix it with half a cup of half and half and a cup and a half of milk. Then refrigerate.

It is really good. I haven’t had any problems. I use it 3-4 times a week, and have for about a month now. Well worth the money. Easier to clean than a french press too.

We purchased the Saeco A-SPV-BK Spidem Villa Super-Automatic Espresso Machine right after Thanksgiving and have been using it to make 2-4 beverages daily for a month now. So far, no glitches and really delicious lattes, teas and hot chocolates every time. It takes up just a bit more counter space than our regular coffee maker, so no worries there. Easy to fill the water and bean holders, empty the espresso puck bin, and to understand the very detailed instructions for setting up, using and cleaning this machine. We have been following the cleaning instructions pretty closely and I’m sure that will help this machine to continue performing well in the long run.

The price is very reasonable at about 0. We have already saved at least the we would have spent at a coffeehouse in the last month by using this machine instead. Plus it makes the kitchen smell so good!

Having been a barrista for 7 years, I really like that you can set the dosage for the amount of coffee in each espresso shot as well as the amount of water that is pulled through on a shot by shot basis. The fact that the machine is all-in-one makes each drink taste great and so easy to make once you get the hang of it.

FYI, if you want your latte to be good and hot with this machine: steam the milk first and leave it in the pitcher with a nice cap of foam on top, then pull the espresso shots directly into your mug with any syrups, sugars or other flavorings, finally pour the steamed milk into the mug and spoon the froth onto the top. Stir if needed. The milk will hold the heat a lot longer when sitting off to the side than the espresso shots.

Another thought: order a steaming pitcher online as well. They are getting harder to find for a decent price (no more than -12) at grocery and department stores. Starbucks has a nice ceramic pitcher for , but it’s only big enough to make enough milk for one drink at a time.

P.S. You don’t have to use espresso roasted beans to make a good espresso. A Columbian French roast or other dark-ish roast will do nicely, but you might want to adjust the dosage to strengthen the shot. Espresso roasted beans are very oily and will require you to clean your machine more often and more carefully.

Vario Coffee Grinder Review

I agonized for a long time before spending over 0 on a grinder. I started off thinking that I would spend no more than a quarter of that amount but after reading numerous reviews, I came to the conclusion that the cheap grinders just don’t work very well. The Vario is so new that I didn’t find any meaningful reviews but I took a chance based on its specifications. I’m very satisfied with it. It looks good, it grinds extremely fast (at least compared to anything I have used before, 20 sec. for enough coffee for a 32 oz French press), there are lots of different grind settings (macro and micro giving lots of combinations), and there are no static problems to throw grounds over the kitchen worktop. The grind appears to be uniform as far as I can tell.

I use it for grinding coffee for a French press. I find setting it a little finer than filter gives the right results for my tastes — I don’t know whether that means its pre-settings are too coarse or whether I just prefer a rich, dirty cup of coffee (I think probably the latter as I’m a Greek/Turkish coffee fan as well as a fan of French press). I have tried it for Greek/Turkish coffee on its finest setting but it did not get it fine enough for that purpose — that does not matter to me as I already have an Athena brass hand-mill. I use the Vario twice a day to make coffee for my French press and it works just great albeit I set it finer than the manufacturer’s setting for French press.

I really love this espresso maker! It makes the perfect amount for me – about a little more than a double shot.

The only problem was that when I first got it the funnel filter fit too tightly in the bottom chamber and I couldn’t get it out. So I had to sand the inner edges of the chamber so it came in and out more easily. After that it was perfect.
